A content management system (CMS) separates content from design. You write text and upload images; the system places both into the predefined layout. Without such a system, someone would have to edit the source code for every change.
The choice depends less on the technology itself and more on the size of the project. WordPress powers around 43 percent of all websites worldwide and is the pragmatic choice for the vast majority of company websites. TYPO3, on the other hand, demonstrates its strengths starting at around 500 pages, multiple languages, and tiered editorial rights. Those starting with 20 pages and choosing TYPO3 are paying for complexity they'll never need.
