A sitemap is a structured list of your website's most important pages, usually in XML format. Search engines use the sitemap to find all your content and better understand how your website is structured. It's especially helpful for large projects or when adding a lot of new content. You can actively submit your sitemap to Google to help with the indexing process.

A sitemap is a list of your website addresses for search engines. It doesn't replace good internal linking; it simply speeds up search engine optimization (SEO). It's crucial that it only includes content you actually want indexed: no redirects, no noindex pages, and no duplicates.

An example from this glossary: Of 120 terms, only the expanded versions should be included in the sitemap, because short entries are considered thin content and should be relegated to the main glossary page. A filter in the glossary plugin handles this automatically. A sitemap with 120 entries, 80 of which point to a different address, would simply waste crawl budget.
