GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)

SEO & GEO

GEO stands for Generative Engine Optimization and refers to the optimization of content to be quoted in responses from AI systems such as ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity or Gemini.

While traditional SEO aims for a high ranking in search results, GEO focuses on being part of the generated answer, often without requiring a click on the website. Key elements include clearly structured content with direct answers at the beginning of each paragraph, verifiable sources, structured data, and strong signals of expertise and trustworthiness ( EEAT ). GEO doesn't replace SEO but builds upon a solid technical and content-related SEO foundation.

For example, Google AI Overviews now reach more than 2 billion users per month, and ChatGPT is used by around 800 million people weekly. A technical article that provides a definition in the first two sentences and supports it with a source is used significantly more often as the basis for an AI answer than an article whose core message only appears after several paragraphs.

For important content, check whether the central statement is already answered in the first paragraph, add structured data and source information, and observe how access from AI responses is reflected in your analysis in the future.
