DDoS is an attack in which a website is overwhelmed with massive traffic from many sources to make it inaccessible. In hosting, this requires protective measures such as firewalls; in SEO, downtime damages rankings.

In a distributed attack, the load doesn't come from a single computer, but from thousands of compromised devices simultaneously. Therefore, blocking a single address is ineffective. Defense measures should be implemented in front of the server, not on top of it; otherwise, the bandwidth will be saturated before the software can even react.

To give you an idea of the scale: An average attack today operates at 5 to 20 gigabits per second. A typical data center connection is 1 gigabit. This means that even a small attack can overload the connection many times over. A protective filter upstream usually detects the pattern within 10 to 60 seconds and reroutes the malicious traffic.
