Backend
The engine room of your website. Here you manage content, change settings, and create new pages. It's not as visually appealing as the frontend your visitors see, but nothing happens without the backend. Access is protected by login and password and is intended only for you and your team. In WordPress, this area is also called the dashboard or admin area.
The backend is the engine room: database, program logic, user management, interfaces. Visitors see none of this, but immediately notice when something goes wrong. A pretty interface won't save a website whose database queries take two seconds.
A common scenario in practice: A shop with 4.000 items loads its homepage in 3,4 seconds. The cause is rarely the design, but rather poorly executed queries. A missing database index can inflate a query from 5 milliseconds to 800 milliseconds. If 20 such queries are executed per page load, that alone accounts for 16 seconds of background processing time.
