Anchor Text

SEO & GEO

Anchor text is the visible, clickable text in a hyperlink that describes to users and search engines what the link points to. In SEO, it's crucial for backlink quality and ranking, as relevant text conveys authority; in web design, it should be natural and user-friendly.

The anchor text is one of the few places where you directly tell search engines what the target page is about. "Click here" misses this opportunity, while "High-speed hosting with LiteSpeed" utilizes it. Naturalness is key: if every link in the text uses the same keyword, it looks contrived.

A good mix for an established website looks something like this: roughly half descriptive text like "fast web hosting," a quarter brand names, and a quarter neutral phrases like "more about this." Anyone who, on the other hand, uses the same money-related term in 90 percent of their links has reliably stood out since the Penguin update of 2012.
