Above the Fold

Web design & UX

Above the fold refers to the upper portion of a website that is visible without scrolling, inspired by the top of a folded newspaper. It is crucial in web design and SEO , as it shapes the first impression and should contain important elements such as calls to action or keywords to retain users.

There's no fixed height for this area because every device crops differently. A more relevant question is what a visitor should understand in the first few seconds: Who are you, what do you offer, and what's next? Large, uninformative images waste precisely this space.

Specifically: On an iPhone with a width of 393 pixels, approximately 650 pixels of height remain after deducting the browser bars. A full-screen hero image of 700 pixels would therefore force any headline below the edge. The same layout fits perfectly on a notebook with a height of 1080 pixels. Therefore, the layout is planned for the narrowest device, not the largest.
